Joshua leaned against the windowsill, staring into the pitch black sky.

Ruthie had been on his mind constantly since last night after he caught a glimpse of her perfect ebony skin. But he was a gentleman – or, at least, tried to be – so he attempted to bury the delightful visual deep in the recesses of his mind. His all day conversing with Ruthie had left him wanting more of her company, which left him unsettled. She was going to be hundreds of miles away in a matter of days at the end of their journey, and he would likely never see her again. He didn’t know exactly what it was, but he knew he didn’t want it to end so suddenly.

When he turned towards the fireplace, he brushed against Ruthie’s journal and it went sailing to the floor. He gingerly picked up the weathered book, and ran a hand through his wavy red hair. He didn’t want to invade her personal thoughts, but his curiosity got the best of him. He reasoned with himself; he wouldn’t read the entire thing, just the latest entry. He apprehensively eyed the bathroom for signs of movement before starting.
